You’ve made the decision, it’s time for yourself or your business to establish a presence on the web. However, before you approach a designer or agency to quote and consult on your new website, you’ll want to be sure to take sufficient time to properly research, identify, and prepare for the project ahead.

With this in mind, I have 8 essential tips to help you establish what you would like to achieve (see tip 1 from working with a graphic designer) with your project before it begins.

Tip 1 – Define your websites primary goal, its purpose.

Decide what you want to accomplish with your website.  Is it to build upon your promotional reach or perhaps to improve upon existing marketing or advertising efforts? Perhaps you simply want to be able to better educate new as well as current clients or customers as to the products and services you offer.

No matter the goal, it is essential to have a clear definition of it.

Tip 2 – Establish a brand identity – if you don’t have one, you need one.

If you haven’t already done so, work with a graphic designer to create a brand identity for your business, organization or profession. Having a logo and proper branding is essential as your website should reflect and enhance your brand; offering further reach and greater accessibility to it.

Note that you may choose to work with a graphic designer that provides both web and brand identity design. In this instance you’ll want to still have an idea as to what your ideal brand message will be.
